FY16 Veal Webinar
The FY16 Veal Webinar took place on December 3rd where Bill Sessions gave an update on Veal Funding, Veal Issues Management and Veal Quality Insurance followed by an update of the Post-harvest Beef Safety Research by Michelle Rossman. Chris Marcocci took us through the FY15 Veal Promotion accomplishments and what we have to look forward to for FY16.

New Tariff Annotations Approved for Imported Veal
USDA-AMS was recently notified by the U.S. International Trade Commission that three new Tariff annotations were approved for veal imported into the United States. The new annotations will be used to collect tariff assessments on fresh or chilled bone-in veal cuts and frozen boneless veal cuts. The current annotation for imported veal carcasses will remain in effect. USDA-AMS will issue rulemaking in 2016 that will establish the actual monetary assessments. The new annotations are necessary to collect a more accurate equivalent per head beef checkoff assessment for the imported veal products.
In an audit of the assessments collected on imported veal products earlier this year, it was discovered that fresh and frozen bone-in and boneless veal cuts were being assessed at the rates established for processing beef. The beef rates reflect an incorrect carcass equivalent rate for veal and greatly reduce the checkoff funds that can be made available for veal projects. USDA-AMS in conjunction with the Beef Board petitioned the ITC for the additional annotations for veal. It is anticipated that the additional revenues from the new annotations will be available for fiscal year 2018 projects.
